Stay on the Sidewalk!, Part II

Last Wednesday, July 28th, I went for my third followup visit with the chief of orthopedics at UMDNJ so he might evaluate my progress in recovering from reconstructive knee surgery June 22nd. While I sat in the waiting room, a young black couple entered the room. The slender young man was walking on crutches — hardly unusual in orthopedics. What was unusual, however, is that the orange pants he had on were rolled up on his left leg, but no foot showed.

As his female companion went to the counter to sign in, an older black couple, very concerned, turned to the young man and asked what happened. Here's the story.
+
He was standing in the street, behind a parked car, talking to friends, when a drunk driver slammed into them. He was crushed between the driven car and the parked car. A young woman he was talking with was thrown under the parked car, and EMS had to call in a hoist to lift the car off her before they could even extricate her to take her to the hospital.
+
The young man's leg was crushed, the bones broken so badly and the soft tissue ravaged so brutally that tho the doctors tried to save his foot, in the end they had to amputate.

This kid, who looked to be only in his early 20s, has had his life permanently altered, in a terrible way, because he was part of the STUPID culture that hangs out IN the street. Please, people. Stay on the sidewalk. PLEASE.
