Church at 19th Street

It's "Church Day" again here at "Newark USA".
+
Yesterday I showed a view of new houses on 19th Street at South Orange Avenue. On the opposite side of South Orange Avenue from that row of houses stands this storefront church.
[Full Gospel Monument of Faith Church, South Orange Avenue and 19th Street, Newark, NJ]
Perhaps two summers ago, well before construction on the houses shown yesterday began, this church erected a great big tent for some festive gathering, that stayed up for a week or more and looked great.
+
Before that, the big, vacant lot the tent was erected on had been what appeared to be a bus garage or such, a one-story brick building with big doors. I doubt it could have been a parking garage in that area, since there would have been no need of one there. It had the look of a bus storage and repair garage, or perhaps a distribution center from which trucks fanned out in all directions to carry newspapers or other goods. I don't know what it was. Do you?
+
I thought when the garage (?) was torn down that the resulting empty space there and across the street, in what was then a second vacant lot, might be big enuf for a film studio or artists-loft buildings. But it has been turned into a cluster of three-family houses. Still good. Clean, modern housing for Newarkers that brings new ratables onto the tax rolls.

A woman I used to work with said that someone she knew inquired into buying one of the new houses on the far side of 19th Street, in the first group built, not the second group on the near side shown yesterday, but was surprised to find they were selling for $239,000 apiece! I did not know at the time that they were not one-family houses but at least two-family. The newer ones are all three-family structures. Let's see how quickly they fill up, once completed.

I had hoped to get pix this weekend of the two sides of 19th Street lined with new houses, but yesterday was yet another dismal, gray day, and today we're supposed to have thunderstorms, with as much as 58mph winds! My Stylus 810 camera might be weatherproof, but I won't expose it to such conditions for pix of what the complex looks like in miserable weather. I'll wait for a beautiful sunny day.

And now, consider the little box below a sort of secular collection plate for my work in showing the New Newark to the world of the Internet.
