Two Jackson Events Tonite
Michael Jackson. James Street activist Bill Chappel forwarded me this email notice:
Friday August 28th, we will feature our Michael Jackson birthday celebration. The event begins in [sic] at 5:00p.m. and goes until 10:00p.m. If you like Michael Jackson, you will love this event. If you love Michael Jackson, well you will definitely love this event. We have several live bands, celebrities, DJ, video recording, fun games and dancers doing the moonwalk under the moonlight. This event is special, [sic] it is the only FREE EVENT celebrating Michaels Birthday.
The email conveyed two graffics, which I have assumed it is OK to use here to help publicize the event. The first, above, is unexceptionable, and speaks to a series of events in Washington Park that I did not hear about until this week. The second, specific to the MJ birthday bash, misspells Jackson's first name. How do these things happen?
Proofreaders are not superfluous. If you're doing your own work alone, use a spellcheck program, which probably would catch "Micheal" for "Michael". If the way you are producing something does not provide you an electronic spellcheck assist, ask someone with a keen eye to look at it for you before you distribute it. I don't have anyone to run this blog's posts by, but if anyone sees a mistake after I have uploaded a post, please let me know so I can correct it. These posts stay online for YEARS, and I'd rather have them correct for years than incorrect for years.
Carrie Jackson. Also tonite (and tomorrow), Newark native Carrie Jackson, a jazz singer, will appear at the Lenox Lounge in NYC. See specifics at post for this past Monday. Here's a foto of her in performance in Weequahic Park this past Tuesday.
I wonder if she'll take the "A" train to get there. Probably not. The 2 or 3 is closer.
SOVUM Event Tomorrow (Saturday). I received notice of what I suppose is a fund-raising event for the South Orange-Vailsburg United Methodist Church not far from me but inside S.O. rather than Vbg. I showed pix of the exterior of this church on March 30, 2008 and recently got email from someone connected to the church who might be able to get me in to take interior pix, especially of the great big stained-glass windows with the sun behind. But we have not yet arranged that. Once we have, you can see those pix the following Sunday.
